Advanced coaching group: starts April 3

The next session of my five-week advanced coaching group for experienced freelance translators starts April 3; the inaugural (January) session of this group filled up, and I’m anticipating that this one will as well. Participants in the January session commented:

Advanced coaching group starts Monday

My advanced coaching group–for experienced translators who want one-on-one advice, plus the support of a group–starts on Monday, and I have a couple of spots left.

The group lasts for five weeks, and is designed to help you create a daily routine around marketing and business development. Everyone starts off with an hour-long individual call with me, during which we talk about the current state of your business and what you’d like to work on during the group. You then break that goal into daily tasks that you track, and we do two weekly group calls for you to ask questions and report on your progress. I send out daily tips for motivation, and the group wraps up with another hour-long individual call.

My final online course of the “school year” starts on May 8: it’s a four-week, fully online session of Marketing to Direct Clients, and is limited to 20 students. It was wonderful to see so many colleagues from around the world, and to take a week out from regular work to learn and network. I’m in catch-up mode today, but wanted to remind you that my final online course of 2017–Marketing to Direct Clients–starts on Wednesday, and I have four spots left. My winter 2018 online course lineup is open for registration, and I’m excited about this 13th (!) season of teaching business development classes for beginning and experienced freelancers. Here’s what’s on tap:

  • A special quick-start session of Getting Started as a Freelance Translator. Open for registration through December 31; I’m offering this in response to requests from prospective participants who have a chunk of time to take the course over the holidays, and who want to learn the basics of freelance translation in a shorter format. Registration is $195 ($180 for ATA members) and includes the course’s self-paced video lessons followed by a one-hour individual consulting session with me. The consulting session must be scheduled in January or February.
  • Breaking Into the Book Translation Market starts January 15. For translators who want to translate books for traditional publishers or for self-published authors. Translation Workshop: French to English–open for registration

Thank you so much to everyone who responded to my recent survey about translation technique courses. The response to that survey was overwhelmingly positive, and I’m excited to announce that the first class–Translation Workshop: French to English is open for registration.

The class will run for eight weeks starting April 23, and the focus is on individual feedback from expert translators on eight practice translations, divided into four specialization modules. The (incredible!) lineup of instructors and specializations is:

  • Michèle Hansen (medical)
  • Karen Tkaczyk (sci/tech)
  • Judy Lyons (financial)
  • Tom West (legal)

Each instructor will teach a two-week module in their specialization, including two weekly live sessions and one weekly practice translation, on which you’ll receive the instructor’s individual feedback. The course is open to French to English translators at any level, who want expert feedback on their work in these specializations. It’s limited to 15 people to allow plenty of time for one-on-one comments.

I’m excited to announce that my Fall 2018 lineup of online courses is open for registration. After 12 years of offering only business development classes for translators, I decided to expand my course offerings into translation technique classes, and the inaugural session of Translation Workshop: French to English ran in May and June.  Thanks to the team of expert instructors (Michele Hansen, Judy Lyons, Karen Tkaczyk, and Tom West), the class went really well; one participant commented:

New online course: English to Spanish legal translation

Earlier this year, I decided to expand my usual offering of online business classes for translators (going strong since 2006!) and begin offering translation skills development courses. The inaugural course in that vein was Translation Workshop: French to English, and–thanks to the efforts of the amazing team of instructors, including Michele Hansen, Judy Lyons, Karen Tkaczyk and Tom West–it was a great success. The session sold out, and feedback from the participants was overwhelmingly positive.

Building on the success of the French to English course, I’m excited that well-known English to Spanish legal translator and lawyer Paula Arturo accepted my invitation to teach a translation technique class. English to Spanish legal translation will run, fully online, from September 4 through October 16, including two live sessions per week and six practice translations that Paula will provide individual feedback on. The students in the French to English workshop commented that it is a (sadly!) rare, and valuable thing to have your work evaluated by a true expert, and this English to Spanish class will give that opportunity to anyone who translates into Spanish and specializes, or wants to specialize, in legal translation.

I have two brand-new online courses coming up in September; after 12+ years of offering business skills courses for translators, I decided earlier this year to branch out into other areas. The inaugural course in that vein, French to English translation workshop–taught by Michele Hansen, Judy Lyons, Karen Tkaczyk and Tom West–sold out and received very positive reviews from the students (“Better than many of the courses in my MA program”). I’m excited to build on that with these two upcoming courses:

  • English to Spanish legal translation, with lawyer-translator-law professor Paula Arturo, beginning on September 4 (that’s next Tuesday!). Organization and productivity for translators: starts Monday

Starting Monday, I’ll be facilitating a four-week online course taught by translator and productivity expert Dorothee Racette: the course is Organization and Productivity for Translators. Dorothee now runs her own consulting company–appropriately named Take Back My Day–and she’s been a tremendous help to me in my own business; I’m excited that more translators will now get to benefit from her expertise. This course will help you:

  • Break the stress/time crunch/feast/famine cycle in your business
  • Create a realistic plan for getting more done during each work day, without added stress
  • Set up your ideal physical and digital work environment
  • Learn productivity techniques specifically for translators, including managing your translation software

We’ll do two live sessions every week (recordings provided if you can’t attend), plus a weekly homework assignment.
